Verhandlungen über Kosovo in Wien
Wien. Zum ersten Mal haben Serben und Kosovo-Albaner am Montag in Wien direkt über die Zukunft der südserbischen Provinz Kosovo verhandelt. Wegen der tiefen Differenzen verfolgt der UN-Sondergesandte Martti Ahtisaari eine Strategie der kleinen Schritte. Die Verhandlungen werden sich vermutlich mindestens bis zum Jahresende hinziehen. Am Montag ging es zunächst um Fragen der Dezentralisierung in politisch weniger wichtigen Kompetenzfeldern. Am Dienstag sollten Bereiche wie Justiz und Polizei im Mittelpunkt stehen.

Österreichischer Satellit BRITE untersucht Sternvibrationen

Der erste österreichische Satellit wird den Namen "BRITE - Bright Target Explorer" tragen. Er soll 2007 ins All geschossen werden und der Beobachtungen von massereichen Sternen dienen. Beteiligt an dem Projekt ist auch das Institut für Astronomie der Universität Wien. Die Vertragsunterzeichnung zum Bau des Satelliten fand heute, 17. Februar 2006, in Wien statt.

Die Wiener Hofburg ist ab 20. Februar Veranstaltungsort der ersten europäischen Konferenz für Sicherheitsforschung. Organisatoren sind die österreichische EU-Ratspräsidentschaft und die EU-Kommission. Das Spektrum der Themen reicht vom Schutz kritischer Infrastruktur über Grenzsicherung bis zu weltraumgeschütztem Krisenmanagement und sozialwissenschaftlichen Sicherheitsaspekten.
Eröffnet wird die Konferenz, zu der rund 1.000 Teilnehmer erwartet werden, von Vizekanzler Hubert Gorbach und dem Vizepräsidenten der EU-Kommission, Günter Verheugen.
